    Jenny Nyström – an introduction

Welcome to an exhibition on the Kalmar artist Jenny Nyström. She was born in 1854 in Kalmar, at Norra vägen 6. When Jenny was eight years old, the family moved to Gothenburg, but it was the places, people and mental pictures from her early childhood in Kalmar that were to influence her art throughout her life. Jenny Nyström is perhaps best known as the ‘mother of the gnome’, as she was the person who created the Swedish image of the ‘jultomte’, thus linking the Swedish version of Santa Claus to the gnomes of Scandinavian folklore. But she was also an academy-trained, prizewinning artist, who studied in Paris and later supported an entire family – at a time when a woman’s place was first and foremost in the home, as wife and mother. Enjoy this guided tour of the exhibition and discover the many aspects of Jenny Nyström’s artistry!
