Jenny Nyström and academic painting
From the age of just eleven, Jenny started lessons at the Gothenburg art school. She was a gifted and diligent pupil, and spent many hours copying famous paintings at the city’s art gallery. Jenny was discovered by Albert Ehrensvärd, the county governor of Gothenburg. They became friends, and he later took her to Stockholm, where he introduced her to the director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Jenny was admitted to the Academy and studied there for eight years. She supported herself during this period by selling drawings, paintings and newspaper subscriptions. The exhibition includes a portrait of Albert Ehrensvärd painted by Jenny. Other works painted during her years at the Royal Academy include Nakenmodell [The Nude], Vingåkerskullan [The Woman from Vingåker] and Blomsterförsäljerskan [The Flower-Seller].
