Jenny Nyström – the mother of the modern gnome
To most people, Jenny Nyström is known as the person who created the Swedish image of the ‘jultomte’, the gnome who brings Swedish children their Christmas gifts. When she was just seventeen years old, she decided to illustrate Viktor Rydberg’s tale ‘Little Vigg’s Christmas Eve’. The author was so enchanted by the pictures that they were printed, and the two embarked on what was to be a lifelong collaboration. It was Jenny who came up with the idea of the gnome, rather than the Christmas goat, bringing children their parcels. In the exhibition, you can see how her gnome changed over the years: from country to city clothing, and back to country again. Jenny painted between 6000 and 7000 gnomes during her life.
