Jenny’s time in Paris
Thanks to the Royal Medal and the scholarship, Jenny was able to continue her artistic studies in Paris. However, women were not allowed to study at the French Academy of Fine Arts at this time, so Jenny studied at private schools – with the same teachers who taught the male students. She worked hard, and all the paintings she submitted to the Paris Salon, an annual art exhibition, were accepted, including the nude study and her self-portrait. The self-portrait, which we have just received back after restoration, is unique. Usually, artists depicted themselves in their painting clothes, but Jenny, who was passionately interested in fashion, has portrayed herself in elegant garments and in a self-assured, traditionally male pose. On completing her studies, Jenny returned to Stockholm to get married.
