The illustrator
Although Jenny was an academy-trained, prizewinning artist, she spent most of her life working as an illustrator of children’s periodicals, books and greetings cards. Jenny’s husband Daniel was in poor health, and it was Jenny who provided for the family, which now also included their son, Curt. This situation was very unusual at the time. It was Jenny who came up with the brilliant business idea of encouraging people to send cards to one another for occasions other than Christmas and Easter, and her postcard designs reflect the whole year with all its festivals and traditions. Jenny worked professionally for almost 70 years, from the 1870s until her death in 1946. This period saw many new inventions, which Jenny incorporated in her pictures, for example a gnome in an aeroplane and witches wishing each other ‘Happy Easter’ by telephone!
