    Ankarfjäll and Blank

Major Claes Ankarfjell from Funbo near Uppsala and boatswain Per Elofsson Blank from Skärlöv parish on east Öland, were two of altogether 800 men who lost their lives when Kronan sank. One of the 42 survivors, Captain Rosenberg, testified that Kronan was crank but also expresses the opinion that the cause of Kronan´s fate was envy between major Ankarfjell, and vice admiral Björnram: one wished Kronan to carry small sails, the other that they should be large. Their dispute led to a loss of valuable time. The immediate reason why Kronan was overset was, probably, that her sails had been insufficiently reefed. Colonel Stegman, yet another victim of the catastrophe, is known to have uttered this words: God forgive them both, those who today have commanded us in such a disastrous way!
