Welcome to the resting place of the Royal Swedish ship Kronan – The Crown – situated at a depth of 26 meters 3,2 nautical miles due east of the village Hulterstad of the south east part of Öland. Due to the low amount of salinity in the Baltic Sea, the wood boring shipworm – Teredo Navalis – cannot exist in the brackish water. Therefore the conditions for preservation of ship´s structure and artifacts of organic material are extremely favorable in the Baltic. The fine clay on the bottom also helps to preserve embedded artefacts and structure. Two thirds of the port side of the ship, from stern forward, is preserved. It measures 40 times 20 meters. The port side rests flat on the sea floor, in the same position that preceded the sinking June 1st 1676. Inside the hull thousands and thousands of artifacts have been recovered since the start of the marine archaeological investigations in 1981. Today, less than 10 % of the area remain to be excavated. More than 30 000 artefacts have been recovered so far. Within the next five years the investigations at sea are planned to be concluded.
