    Pewter

The 17th century, is the century of pewter. During this era pewter-making was accomplished to perfection, and the range of the craftsmanship was greater than ever. A large amount of artefacts of pewter have been recovered from Kronan. In addition to hundreds of buttons and pewtercorks that originally sealed glass-flasks, the most pewter finds consist of plates, cans, tankards and flasks. The plates are especially interesting since they wear stamps and marks of both the maker and the owner. Most of the pewter plates recovered from the wreck have belonged to the general admiral Lorentz Creutz onboard. Many of them also wear the initials of his wife Elsa Duwall. The pewter of the highest quality wore four stamps. The stamps show that the pewter-plates from Kronan were made by craftsmen from various places like London, Riga, Stettin, Turku, as well as in the Swedish cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Norrköping.
