The coin treasures from Kronan are an exciting category of finds, since they can be traced to specific individuals onboard. The treasures don´t seem to have been handled as collective goods, meant for several people. Instead they seem to have belonged to high ranked individuals on the ship. The coins also play a symbolic role and are not just meant for trading. They are concrete proof of the owners’ connection to a social elite. The total number of recovered coins from Kronan so far, amount to close to 18 000. Most of them are Swedish. An exception to this are the gold coins. Most of them are Dutch and German. Over 16 000 coins are of silver, and over 1 000 of copper. The remaining are of gold.
