    Buckle

All seven of the embossed clasps that have been found in the ringfort are displayed in this room. Well-to-do women used such clasps to fasten their clothing. Two of the clasps are broken, with half still missing. The clasps are true works of art, with images and symbols that tell of the myths and sagas of the time. They were probably made locally by highly gifted metalsmiths.

Thank you for your visit! Want to know more? Go to www.sandbyborg.se/en/home for all the latest information about the ringfort: finds, objects and excavations. You can also find out how to make a donation to the project. If you’d like to see how Sandby Borg may have looked when it was inhabited, visit Eketorp, the reconstructed Iron Age fort in south-eastern Öland. The two ringforts are virtually identically in character. You can also become a member of the non-profit association “Friends of Sandby Borg” – find us on Facebook!
