    The motive

Through the ages, people have always buried their dead – even their enemies. Why were the people of Sandby Borg put to death – and why were they further insulted by not even being buried? The answer may lie in one of the archaeological discoveries: under the floor in one of the houses are a broken-off raised stone and traces of cremation graves. In other words, the house – and the ringfort – were built on an existing grave field. Perhaps the massacre was the result of a blood feud? Perhaps some of the people living in the ringfort were returning Ölanders who bragged and showed off their new-won riches, and this aroused envy in others on the island? Given that the perpetrators were able to guard the ringfort and stop the people from burying their dead, it is likely that they too lived on Öland, perhaps at Gråborg some 20 kilometres away. Further investigations of the Sandby Borg crime scene will hopefully provide us with more clues.
