The discovery, the excavations and the finds

In 2010, it was discovered that looting pits had been dug in Sandby Borg, and an archaeological rescue action was carried out. The archaeologists made several unexpected discoveries, including five jewellery stashes containing magnificent embossed clasps, pearls and rings. The stashes were all located just to the right of the door in different houses, as if the women had agreed a common hiding place. The excavations that followed also unearthed parts of male skeletons. Other finds include ceramics, arrowheads, decorative bells, combs and other items. Remnants of glass-bead manufacture show that the craft had been mastered in Sweden as early as the 5th century, which is 200 years earlier than was thought previously.
