    The Great Migration and ringforts

The period from AD 400 to 550 is known as “the Era of the Great Migration”. This was a turbulent time with people moving from one place to another, and war and pillaging rife across Europe. The people of Öland had close connections with the Roman Empire. They served as soldiers in the Roman army and returned to Öland with gold in the form of solidi, the type of coin in which soldiers were paid. This period saw between 10 and 15 ringforts built on Öland, places where the local people could take refuge in troubled times. Sandby Borg is the only fort located right by the sea. In the display cases here, you can see various everyday items from this period.
