    Introduction

On a late-summer night 1500 years ago, the inhabitants of Sandby Borg in south-eastern Öland were killed in a violent massacre. The dead were left unburied and the fort was abandoned. Centuries passed, and what had happened was forgotten. It was not until 2011 that the tragedy came to light. Archaeological excavations of the site are providing us with new knowledge both of everyday life in one of Öland’s Iron Age ringforts and of the massacre itself.
